Age of Conan

The G4 MMO Report
Tuesday, April 29, 2008, 1:50:35 AM zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
This week you may notice something a little different. No, I'm not talking about the hair you're noticing in places where there was no hair before. I'm talking about the fact that The MMO Report has let the balloon go up one day early. That means more raiding time, extra grinding, and an additional full day's worth of lulz. In this episode you all get a special treat; some sneaky bastard was able to leak stills of Wrath of the Lich King onto the internet for your viewing pleasure. Yes, that Wrath of the Lich King. It's in the Alpha stage of development right now, which means you don't get to play it yet. Also, we'll give you a fair warning about Square-Enix's new user agreement for Playonline. Check your attic for chocobos watching you masturbate.

Filed under: At a glance, Massively meta MMO Mash-up: Age of Hello KittyWelcome to a new column here at Massively, where I'll take two massively multiplayer online games and chop them up into little pieces, so I can put them back together with electrical tape and staples. This is the MMO Mashup, where you can expect to see everything from the startlingly strange to the ubiquitously unusual. Lets get straight into it then, with the pink-yet-dark world of Age of Hello Kitty. Massively goes hands-on with LotRO Book 13 videoWe could write reams of text that describe in loving detail all the features that await you in Lord of the Rings Online's Book 13 content patch. We could lay out screenshot after screenshot that could perfectly capture the chilly northlands that are being introduced, the eerie agent of Angmar who is tearing apart the land or the monstrous beasts that roam the wintry tundra. MMOGology: Sex gamesWhat are the risqué features in Age of Conan and what will their implementation mean for future MMOGs? If Age of Conan is successful can we expect other developers to push the envelope further, or has someone already beaten them to the punch? If you're easily offended you may wish to skip what follows after the break. Massively Speaking Podcast Episode 2Massively Speaking Episode 2 runs down news and features from Massively.com for the week of April 14th-20th. Shawn and Michael are joined by blogging regulars Akela Talamasca and Jonathan Northwood to talk about the next LOTRO Book, the Epic Villain Archetype video, and (of course) Age of Conan! The next EverQuest 2 expansion is ...So what is the Shadow of Odyssey? There are so many unexplored plot threads in the Norrath of EQ2, and the title is so vague, that it could be almost anything. Still, we have a few good ideas. If we had to put money on it, we'd bet that the shadow in question has something to do with the Void, and the mysterious Shadowmen. Or, Odyssey could refer to the long-lost homeland of the Erudites, the magic-weaving spellsmiths of yore. Continue reading The week in Massively features Permalink Email this Linking Blogs Comments

Forum post of the day: Docking DKP
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
Filed under: Items, Analysis / Opinion, Guilds, Raiding, Forums To function properly, all guilds must have rules for participation, gear, and general order. Since the ancient MMORPG days, many guilds have assigned Dragon Kill Points (DKP) to players for their participation in raids and events. The points are turned in for gear rewards from raids. Some guilds dock DKP for members that do not meet their standards. Aerte of Blackrock has questioned the wisdom of his guild's policy on this practice for a member that had regularly violated the rules. The conundrum begins with the statement. "Recently we had a member quit who during the course of his rather brief stay managed to have about 130 DKP docked for various infractions. Not showing up specced properly, gems unacceptable, enchants unacceptable or non-existent, bad attitude....etc..." The original poster expressed that this may not be the best way to keep players in line.Continue reading Forum post of the day: Docking DKP Permalink Email this Comments
Breakfast Topic: Real Azrothean Heroes
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
Filed under: Fan stuff, Breakfast topics, Lore, NPCs Alex Ziebart and Elizabeth Wachowski do an excellent job of filling us in on the stories behind our World of Warcraft adventures in the regular Know Your Lore columns. I had very little experience with the real time strategy games that led to our beloved MMORPG. I find that learning the lore gives a bit more meaning to my level grinding. As I've leveled up I've come across some really interesting NPCs, some more famous than others. I'd like to take some time to look at some of the lesser known heroes of Azeroth. Caregiver Inaara has to be the hardest working character in the game. Stationed as the Innkeper of Sun's Reach Harbor on the Isle of Quel'Danas. Reportedly an excellent companion, Inaara serves up cold brews to thousands of thirsty characters, tired from endless daily quests. Even as a newcomer to Azeroth, we know little about this blue beauty, except that she is a surviver and serves her patrons with an unflinching smile. Sure there are famous folks like Jaina Proudmoore and Rexxar, but let's take some time to salute the little people. Who's you're hero? Permalink Email this Comments

Filed under: Nintendo DS, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Adventure, Galleries Crash Bandicoot returns for another platforming adventure in October, 2008. The boisterous character again has the power to ride defeated enemies, using their special abilities. For example, before crossing a lake, he might force a frost-breathing creature to freeze it solid. Other times, he might roll on top of a spherical enemy over ramps, like a Sonic or Billy Hatcher.But unlike the previous Crash, players can carry along a favorite enemy at all times. This way, gamers can defeat an immediate puzzle, but still retain the abilities of another, go-to creature.I recently tried Radical's Wii version of the in-development title. The team is building for the Wii first, and essentially scaling the graphics up for the 360 and down for the PS2. This approach gives the Wii title a finished sheen that beats most others Wii games. (Multi-platform games often scale PS2 graphics up to the Wii, but don't truly utilize the hardware.) Crash seemed fun; its bright graphics and light tone should attract its kid-targeted audience.Gallery: Crash Bandicoot: Mind over MutantContinue reading Joystiq impressions: Crash Bandicoot: Mind over Mutant (Wii)Permalink Email this Comments
Joystiq impressions: The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon (360/PS3/PS2/Wii/DS)
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
Filed under: Nintendo DS, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Adventure, Galleries Few games appeal to adults and kids, but The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon could please both audiences. The younger group gets its beloved purple dragon and familiar platforming. The older crowd will like the depth in gameplay; among other changes, Spyro can now fly at any time.After recently seeing a demo of the game, I was most impressed by its style and art; adults will find a lot of nuance here, too. Spyro mixes a lot of brightness and darkness in its style, reminding me of Fantasia or other old-guard Disney animations. Grasses leaned back as the wind raked over them, in a saccharine outdoor scene. But in another moment, sharp, muted stones matched the danger from an attacking monster.Due in Fall, 2008 for 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, and DS, Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon could even interest players who know nothing of the character.Gallery: The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the DragonContinue reading Joystiq impressions: The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon (360/PS3/PS2/Wii/DS)Permalink Email this Comments
Japanese hardware sales, April 14 - April 20: Endangered edition

Report: Casual Gaming Masking the Saturated Core Gamer Market
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
A new report for IDG Research claims that the core gamer market is saturated, and that only the huge success of casual gaming is keeping things moving. Without more publishers embracing the casual gamer, IDG believes the industry could stagnate, reports MCV. According to the report, Expansion of the games industry in recent years can be attributed largely to Nintendo with the Wii and DS. Citing facts like the overall market internationally having declined 7% when you don’t count the hardware and software sales of the Wii and DS. Apparently they didn’t consider that maybe people are buying Nintendo systems instead of the PS3 or 360. “The middling performance of the 360, coupled with the PS3’s slow start has led IDG to the conclusion that the core gamer market is in fact saturated,” states the report. “On a combined hardware and software basis, the global market grew by 21 per cent with the DS and the Wii in 2007, but declined by seven per cent without the two Nintendo platforms,” adds the IDG report. “In short, the balance of power has significantly shifted towards Nintendo.” ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:Halo 3 Captures Casual Gamers for Xbox 360JC Barnett Claims Super Smash Brothers Brawl Is Unfit For The WiiWomen Still Dominate Casual GamingMen are Closet Casual GamersSOE to Report to SCE
1UP Impressions of the New N-Gage
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
We’ve been reporting on the new N-Gage platform for several months now after learning that Nokia intended to revive the name of its failed handheld device as a mobile gaming platform. Although only supported for a scant few phones currently, Nokia is expecting support to catch on as time goes on. With sidetalkin’ a thing of the past, 1UP’s Andrew Podolsky got some hands-on time with N-Gage. Many of these games use complex 3D and look much better than typical mobile games. The games that are rendered in 2D tend to have sharp visuals as well. Most N-Gage games can be rotated 90 degrees into a “landscape view,” which has the added advantage of allowing you to hold your hands on both sides of the screen, like a PSP or DS. When held horizontally, you can easily reach buttons on the right side of the screen, which have been specifically placed for use during games. The comfortable feel of new systems like the Nokia N-81 cannot be understated, especially considering the problems the old N-Gage had with its form factor. There’s still a lot of work to be done, and the particulars are far from perfect. With its Xbox Live-styled online service, there is hope that N-Gage might actually catch on this time. The market is certainly there, as Popcap knows from its experience with Bejeweled. ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:Wii Sport GageNew Nokia N-Gage Platform Pushed BackCapcom Games Back on N-Gage in 2008Nokia Launches N-Gage Platform to Unsurprisingly Little Fanfare1UP Nintendo Summit Impressions All in One Lovely Post

Video Game Releases for the Week of April 27th
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
We are all well aware that the giant that is GTA IV will be hitting stores on Tuesday. We also know that Mario Kart Wii will be released tomorrow, which is Sunday, which is a weird day for a game release, which is why I am using the world “which” so much. Nevertheless, there ARE other games hitting shelves next week, and while they deserve just as much attention as any other highly anticipated title, whoever decided that this would be a great week to launch their game needs either a reality check or to lay off the sauce. Here are the games slated to hit shelves next week. As always, we are not responsible for any changes to said dates - blame the publisher, not us. Since there are not as many releases as previous weeks, I did not break them down by system this time and listed the date instead: April 27: Mario Kart Wii (Wii) April 28: Corvette Evolution GT (DS), Requiem: Bloodymare (PC) April 29: Brain Voyage (DS), GTA IV & GTA IV Special Edition (PS3, Xbox 360), Let’s Pilates (DS), Let’s Yoga (DS) Polar Games 2 (PC), Riding Star (PS2) SNK Arcade Classics: Volume 1 (PS2, PSP) Toy Shop (DS) Winx Club: Mission Enchantix (DS) For more information on any of the games listed above, just click through the links. ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:Video Game Releases for the Week of April 13thWorldwide PSP releases for the week of July 29Play Gears of War With Velvet Revolver (Xbox Live)Siren: New Translation Video is Pretty Scary - Let's Hope the Same Can be Said for the Game6/18/07 - New Releases This Week
Crash Bandicoot: Mind Over Mutant Impressions [Sierra Spring Event 08]
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
Good old Crash Bandicoot, he takes a licking and keeps on ticking. And tick he will in his next game, for the Xbox 360, PS2, PSP and PSP. It is a follow up to Crash of the Titans and this time the story takes form in a spoof of the iPhone. A techno device has hit Crash's world that everyone wants and MUST get their hands on. What they don't know is, this device is being used to control their minds by nefarious forces. The only one who seems to not be affected by the device is Crash who must use his powers to save the day. The title includes plenty of the platforming levels that Crash is famous for, but also includes a more free roaming aspect than previous games. Crash uses an arsenal of powers including a new dodge move and combo attacks as well as capturing enemy powers that can be used later. These powers can be used not only to defeat other enemies but also to solve the various environmental puzzles that you are confronted with. There is a limit to the number of enemy powers that you can carry at one time however, so be sure to stock up wisely. And don't be discouraged if you can't figure out a level right away and be sure to remember that there are multiple ways to solve every puzzle. Often the key is matching your enemy powers with your environments. Crash will include a co-p mode where an additional player can add in as Crash's sexy friend Co-Co. No online mode is in place yet but it is something that is being considered. While the graphics looked great and it was definitely a new game in many respects, this ultimately seemed like more of the same to me. I can see this game appealing to the younger set or die hard Crash Bandicoot fans (?) but more than likely most regular gamers will find it a bit typical. Of course I could be wrong and this could be the title that brings Crash back to his former glory. Then who will be laughing out of the other side of his face? galleryPost('crash0425', 3, ');
The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon: Spyro Grows Up, [Sierra Spring Event 08]
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Spyro franchise, Sierra and Estranges Libellules are teaming up to bring you The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon. This title will complete the trilogy of Spyro games that includes A New Beginning and The Eternal Night. Spyro has long been considered a kids game and while it is still being marketed to a younger audience, the franchise has definitely grown up. The first thing I noticed was the graphical upgrade. For a cartoony style game, the backgrounds and character models looked really nice. The water rushing by in a nearby river was particularly well done. Once I stopped gazing a the backgrounds, it was time to take a look at Spyro himself. His character model has matured with the franchise and he looks a bit more like a teenager than a baby dragon. This game also marks a new power for Spyro: flight. In previous games, Spyro could only sort of hover and glide a short distance, but now he has the full power of flying at his fingertips. Joining Spyro in his adventures is Cynder, a rather goth like female dragon who was formerly an enemy in the last game. You can play as both characters by switching back and forth with a button press or bring a friend along to play in co-op mode.Spyro isn't the only thing that has grown up in this game however. The battle system has matured greatly as well, adding in God of War and Devil May Cry type fighting elements. Despite the violence of these two games particular style, Spyro manages to pull the best elements while still remaining kid friendly. For instance, Spyro's ability to harness the elements features a Kratos-like electrical area attack that will take out multiple ememies at the same time. The spouting fountains of blood and severed limbs however, are absent. Cynder has her own set of abilities as well that make use of her darker shadow powers, using things like poison and fear. Gems can be collected throughout the levels to help power up Spyro and Cynder's various powers. Sets of armor can be found throughout the game that can be mixed and matched or use one whole set to gain bonus abilities. Spyro also boasts a pretty hefty voice acting cast with Elijah Wood returning as the voice of Spyro, goth girl supreme Christina Ricci as Cynder, Gary Oldman as Ignitus, Wayne Brady as Sparx, Mark Hamill as the evil Dark Master and Blair Underwood as Hunter. It is expected to hit in early October on the Wii, DS, PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360 with the PSP oddly absent from the lineup. The gameplay on the various systems will vary slightly as they always do, but the storyline will remain the same. The PS3 version will even take advantage of the Sixxaxis controls although this control scheme will be optional. Apparently they have learned a lesson that the creator of a certain other dragon flying game didn't. All in all I really enjoyed what I saw of this latest Spyro title and the new battle system seems like it might cross that line from pure kids game into attracting some more open minded adult gamers who enjoy a cartoony romp. As a fan of the first Spyro game, I will certainly be interested in checking it out once it is released to see more of how the the little purple dragon has come into his own. galleryPost('spyrods0425', 3, ');
