Japanese hardware sales, April 14 - April 20: Endangered edition
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
Filed under: Nintendo DS, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, BusinessAs the devious rapscallions who skip to the figures every week already know, the nation of Japan (and indirectly, the entire planet) is facing a dire emergency. No, not overpopulation, or global warming, or the biodiversity crisis -- I speak, of course, of the pending disappearance of all video game consoles from the face of the Earth, clearly evidenced by this week's underwhelming sales charts.These lackluster sales figures couldn't possibly represent a decline in the ludological avarice of the Japanese people -- so what could be the cause for all the downpointery? Mankind's interference in the natural habitat of these illustrious creatures? Some sort of self-destructive behavior? Scientists and industry analysts are working around the clock to solve this dilemma before the gaming ecosystem collapses upon itself, leaving humanity with just one method of self-entertainment: Ball in a Cup. However, cheap Ball in a Cup knock-offs will surely follow, leading to the inevitable crash of the Ball in a Cup market, at which point we'll really be screwed. To help prevent this near-certain extinction, the Joystiq crew has begun organizing "Console Aid 2008", a summer concert series that will sweep through the Pacific Northwest like a philanthropic plague. With headliners such as Tay Zonday, Rick Astley, O' Reely n' teh Buckets, and (obligatorily) U2, we're sure to garner millions in ticket sales -- a breathtakingly charitable 4 percent of which will go toward the Video Game Preservation Fund. What? Blogger's gotta eat. - PSP: 85,421 300 (0.35%)- DS Lite: 44,551 2,607 (5.53%) - Wii: 44,241 2,055 (4.44%) - PS3: 7,438 794 (9.65%) - PS2: 6,545 289 (4.23%) - Xbox 360: 1,076 71 (6.19%) [Source: Media Create]See: The dwindling archivesPermalink Email this Comments
1UP Impressions of the New N-Gage
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
We’ve been reporting on the new N-Gage platform for several months now after learning that Nokia intended to revive the name of its failed handheld device as a mobile gaming platform. Although only supported for a scant few phones currently, Nokia is expecting support to catch on as time goes on. With sidetalkin’ a thing of the past, 1UP’s Andrew Podolsky got some hands-on time with N-Gage. Many of these games use complex 3D and look much better than typical mobile games. The games that are rendered in 2D tend to have sharp visuals as well. Most N-Gage games can be rotated 90 degrees into a “landscape view,” which has the added advantage of allowing you to hold your hands on both sides of the screen, like a PSP or DS. When held horizontally, you can easily reach buttons on the right side of the screen, which have been specifically placed for use during games. The comfortable feel of new systems like the Nokia N-81 cannot be understated, especially considering the problems the old N-Gage had with its form factor. There’s still a lot of work to be done, and the particulars are far from perfect. With its Xbox Live-styled online service, there is hope that N-Gage might actually catch on this time. The market is certainly there, as Popcap knows from its experience with Bejeweled. ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:Wii Sport GageNew Nokia N-Gage Platform Pushed BackCapcom Games Back on N-Gage in 2008Nokia Launches N-Gage Platform to Unsurprisingly Little Fanfare1UP Nintendo Summit Impressions All in One Lovely Post
Video Game Releases for the Week of April 27th
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
We are all well aware that the giant that is GTA IV will be hitting stores on Tuesday. We also know that Mario Kart Wii will be released tomorrow, which is Sunday, which is a weird day for a game release, which is why I am using the world “which” so much. Nevertheless, there ARE other games hitting shelves next week, and while they deserve just as much attention as any other highly anticipated title, whoever decided that this would be a great week to launch their game needs either a reality check or to lay off the sauce. Here are the games slated to hit shelves next week. As always, we are not responsible for any changes to said dates - blame the publisher, not us. Since there are not as many releases as previous weeks, I did not break them down by system this time and listed the date instead: April 27: Mario Kart Wii (Wii) April 28: Corvette Evolution GT (DS), Requiem: Bloodymare (PC) April 29: Brain Voyage (DS), GTA IV & GTA IV Special Edition (PS3, Xbox 360), Let’s Pilates (DS), Let’s Yoga (DS) Polar Games 2 (PC), Riding Star (PS2) SNK Arcade Classics: Volume 1 (PS2, PSP) Toy Shop (DS) Winx Club: Mission Enchantix (DS) For more information on any of the games listed above, just click through the links. ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:Video Game Releases for the Week of April 13thWorldwide PSP releases for the week of July 29Play Gears of War With Velvet Revolver (Xbox Live)Siren: New Translation Video is Pretty Scary - Let's Hope the Same Can be Said for the Game6/18/07 - New Releases This Week
Crash Bandicoot: Mind Over Mutant Impressions [Sierra Spring Event 08]
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
Good old Crash Bandicoot, he takes a licking and keeps on ticking. And tick he will in his next game, for the Xbox 360, PS2, PSP and PSP. It is a follow up to Crash of the Titans and this time the story takes form in a spoof of the iPhone. A techno device has hit Crash's world that everyone wants and MUST get their hands on. What they don't know is, this device is being used to control their minds by nefarious forces. The only one who seems to not be affected by the device is Crash who must use his powers to save the day. The title includes plenty of the platforming levels that Crash is famous for, but also includes a more free roaming aspect than previous games. Crash uses an arsenal of powers including a new dodge move and combo attacks as well as capturing enemy powers that can be used later. These powers can be used not only to defeat other enemies but also to solve the various environmental puzzles that you are confronted with. There is a limit to the number of enemy powers that you can carry at one time however, so be sure to stock up wisely. And don't be discouraged if you can't figure out a level right away and be sure to remember that there are multiple ways to solve every puzzle. Often the key is matching your enemy powers with your environments. Crash will include a co-p mode where an additional player can add in as Crash's sexy friend Co-Co. No online mode is in place yet but it is something that is being considered. While the graphics looked great and it was definitely a new game in many respects, this ultimately seemed like more of the same to me. I can see this game appealing to the younger set or die hard Crash Bandicoot fans (?) but more than likely most regular gamers will find it a bit typical. Of course I could be wrong and this could be the title that brings Crash back to his former glory. Then who will be laughing out of the other side of his face? galleryPost('crash0425', 3, ');
The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon: Spyro Grows Up, [Sierra Spring Event 08]
Today, April 28, 2008, 9 hours ago zergwatch@stiltonco.com (Zergwatch)
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Spyro franchise, Sierra and Estranges Libellules are teaming up to bring you The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon. This title will complete the trilogy of Spyro games that includes A New Beginning and The Eternal Night. Spyro has long been considered a kids game and while it is still being marketed to a younger audience, the franchise has definitely grown up. The first thing I noticed was the graphical upgrade. For a cartoony style game, the backgrounds and character models looked really nice. The water rushing by in a nearby river was particularly well done. Once I stopped gazing a the backgrounds, it was time to take a look at Spyro himself. His character model has matured with the franchise and he looks a bit more like a teenager than a baby dragon. This game also marks a new power for Spyro: flight. In previous games, Spyro could only sort of hover and glide a short distance, but now he has the full power of flying at his fingertips. Joining Spyro in his adventures is Cynder, a rather goth like female dragon who was formerly an enemy in the last game. You can play as both characters by switching back and forth with a button press or bring a friend along to play in co-op mode.Spyro isn't the only thing that has grown up in this game however. The battle system has matured greatly as well, adding in God of War and Devil May Cry type fighting elements. Despite the violence of these two games particular style, Spyro manages to pull the best elements while still remaining kid friendly. For instance, Spyro's ability to harness the elements features a Kratos-like electrical area attack that will take out multiple ememies at the same time. The spouting fountains of blood and severed limbs however, are absent. Cynder has her own set of abilities as well that make use of her darker shadow powers, using things like poison and fear. Gems can be collected throughout the levels to help power up Spyro and Cynder's various powers. Sets of armor can be found throughout the game that can be mixed and matched or use one whole set to gain bonus abilities. Spyro also boasts a pretty hefty voice acting cast with Elijah Wood returning as the voice of Spyro, goth girl supreme Christina Ricci as Cynder, Gary Oldman as Ignitus, Wayne Brady as Sparx, Mark Hamill as the evil Dark Master and Blair Underwood as Hunter. It is expected to hit in early October on the Wii, DS, PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360 with the PSP oddly absent from the lineup. The gameplay on the various systems will vary slightly as they always do, but the storyline will remain the same. The PS3 version will even take advantage of the Sixxaxis controls although this control scheme will be optional. Apparently they have learned a lesson that the creator of a certain other dragon flying game didn't. All in all I really enjoyed what I saw of this latest Spyro title and the new battle system seems like it might cross that line from pure kids game into attracting some more open minded adult gamers who enjoy a cartoony romp. As a fan of the first Spyro game, I will certainly be interested in checking it out once it is released to see more of how the the little purple dragon has come into his own. galleryPost('spyrods0425', 3, ');
